Use a simple, text-based resume with familiar headings, dates that agree with your application, and technical skills you can defend in an interview. This guide includes two complete examples, a job-description matching exercise, a GitHub checklist and an ATS export test. Both sample candidates are fictional; their details illustrate how to present genuine work, not achievements to copy.
The best resume format depends on your experience
| Decision | Fresher or campus applicant | Software engineer with 2+ years |
|---|---|---|
| Strongest evidence | Projects, internship, coursework | Recent professional contributions |
| Section order | Contact, summary, education, skills, projects, internship | Contact, summary, work experience, skills, selected projects, education |
| Typical starting length | One page | One or two pages if relevant work warrants it |
| Best first bullet | The feature or system you personally built | The change you owned and how it affected a system or team |
| Portfolio priority | Two working repositories or demos with clear READMEs | Selected code or public examples that do not expose employer data |
| Common mistake | Listing every language ever studied | Listing a stack without explaining your contribution |
The order is flexible. If a fresher has a strong software internship, put it before academic projects. If an experienced engineer has a public project that exactly matches the role, move it higher. Recruiters should reach your most relevant evidence without searching.
Put your strongest proof first
Software engineer resume order changes with experience
Fresher · College project or internship
- 1Contact and target role
- 2Education and technical skills
- 3Projects with tests and evidence
- 4Internship or volunteering
2+ years · Professional engineering work
- 1Contact and experience summary
- 2Recent work and ownership
- 3Skills and selected projects
- 4Education
Use the same readable one-column layout for both.
Make the resume easy for an ATS to read
An applicant tracking system may extract your name, jobs, education and skills into fields. Some systems struggle with graphics, text boxes, columns or contact details placed in a document header. A major ATS vendor, Greenhouse, documents those as possible parsing problems. A successful file upload does not guarantee every field was read correctly.
Use one column, standard section names and selectable text. A plain PDF exported from Word can work, and so can DOCX when the employer accepts it. Follow the file type requested in the vacancy. Avoid uploading a screenshot or a scanned page. There is no universal ATS pass score, so treat checker percentages as diagnostic feedback rather than a hiring threshold.
| Element | Practical default | Why it helps |
|---|---|---|
| Name and contact | Full name, +91 phone, email, city, GitHub/portfolio, optional professional profile | Readers and parsers can find you |
| Headings | Work Experience, Projects, Skills, Education | Clear section boundaries |
| Dates | Jun 2024 – Present, or another consistent format | The timeline is understandable |
| Font | Readable standard font, usually 10.5 to 12 pt | No cramped text or decorative glyphs |
| Layout | One column, ordinary bullets, no progress bars | Predictable reading order |
| File | Text-based PDF or DOCX as requested | Better chance of clean extraction |
| Filename | Firstname_Lastname_Software_Engineer_Resume.pdf | Easy to identify when downloaded |
After exporting, select all text in the file and paste it into a plain-text editor. Check the order of sections, missing words and misplaced links. When the application portal fills fields automatically, review and correct them. This test can detect obvious problems; it does not simulate every ATS.
Fresher software engineer resume: section by section
Start with a short summary only if it says something a hiring manager could investigate. “Passionate, hardworking engineer seeking a challenging environment” tells the reader nothing. Name your target role, a relevant technology and evidence of work.
Put education high when you have no professional work. Include your degree, college, graduation or expected graduation date, and marks if required by the employer or campus placement rules. Keep skills grouped by category. Only include a tool after you have used it enough to answer questions about it.
For projects, include the problem, technology choices, your role and a demonstrable outcome. A working endpoint, passing tests or a live demo is stronger evidence than “created a major project.” If the repo is public, make sure your README explains how to run it, what parts you built and what still needs work.

Software engineer resume for 2+ years of experience
After two years, the top of the page should show the systems and responsibilities you have actually handled. Move work history ahead of college projects. Explain what you changed, how you checked the change and any outcome you can substantiate. Use your official title and accurate dates.
A backend engineer might talk about query performance, failures, deployments or observability. A frontend engineer may have useful evidence in accessibility fixes, bundle analysis, responsive components or test coverage. Quality engineers should describe the quality risk they found or the tests they automated, not only the testing tool. Not every contribution needs a number, and an invented percentage makes an otherwise good bullet difficult to defend.

Priya Nair
Backend software engineer
Hyderabad, Telangana | +91 [phone] | [email]
GitHub: [link]
Summary
Backend software engineer with 2+ years building Python services and maintaining PostgreSQL-backed applications. Experience investigating slow endpoints, reviewing pull requests and working with QA on regression checks. Interested in backend reliability and API design.
Work experience
Software Engineer, Example Commerce Software Pvt Ltd
Feb 2024 – Present
- Diagnosed a slow order-history endpoint, traced it to an expensive database query and added a reviewed index after checking its query plan.
- Added request validation and structured error responses to order-management APIs, with regression tests for invalid input.
- Worked with QA to verify high-risk checkout paths before launch and created a repeatable staging release checklist.
- Reviewed small pull requests and explained repository conventions to two newer teammates.
Selected project
Order API test harness
Python, pytest | 2025
- Built a small internal test harness for order-state transitions and edge cases, and documented its limitations and assumptions for QA review.
Technical skills
Python, SQL, FastAPI, PostgreSQL, REST APIs, pytest, Git, Linux, CI workflows
Education
B.Tech in Computer Science, [University]
Graduated 2023
This example deliberately avoids invented speed-up numbers. If you can show a legitimate baseline and test method, add them: “Reduced p95 latency from X ms to Y ms in a comparable staging benchmark.” If you cannot prove those numbers, describe the change and how you validated it instead.
Turn a technical job description into better bullets
Suppose a real posting asks for “Python, REST APIs, SQL optimization, unit tests and collaboration with QA.” Match each requirement to evidence before editing. Do not insert tools you have only heard of.
| Job requirement | Evidence to find | Resume wording when true |
|---|---|---|
| Python services | A service or feature you wrote | Built a Python endpoint for stock adjustments and validated inputs |
| SQL optimization | A query plan, index or profiling task | Investigated a slow query and reviewed index changes against its execution plan |
| Unit tests | Actual tests you wrote or maintained | Added tests for duplicate records and missing-resource errors |
| Team collaboration | A real handover, code review or release | Coordinated regression checks with QA before a staging release |
| Git and code review | Changes you submitted and reviewed | Submitted small pull requests and incorporated reviewer feedback |
Mention the terms the job uses where they are accurate. The point is to make a match understandable, not to repeat “software engineer” twenty times. If the role asks for Java Spring Boot and your recent work is Python, be clear about the difference. Describe transferable work, then prepare to discuss how you would learn the stack.
Strong engineering bullets: before and after
| Weak bullet | Specific version |
|---|---|
| Worked on APIs. | Created and tested an endpoint that rejects negative stock adjustments and returns clear validation errors. |
| Better database performance. | Examined a slow order query with EXPLAIN and tested an index change with similar test data. |
| Used GitHub on a group project. | Opened pull requests for the registration flow and fixed review feedback before merge. |
| Responsible for bug fixes. | Reproduced an intermittent pagination bug, added a failing regression test and corrected the offset calculation. |
Each improved bullet describes an action a candidate should be able to demonstrate. If you led only the testing, do not claim you designed the entire API. If your team improved uptime, explain what you owned and use a team outcome only with context.
A GitHub profile that supports your resume
A GitHub link helps only when the reader can find useful evidence. Pin one or two relevant repositories. In each README, explain what the program does, how to run it, a screenshot or API request example if useful, and what is incomplete. Avoid uploading API keys, private client data or code owned by a previous employer.
For a backend project, reviewers might ask: Why this schema? What happens when a request is repeated? How are errors handled? Which tests fail when the business rule changes? Write a short “design decisions” section in the README. That prepares you for the interview better than adding another framework to your skills list.
India-specific details software engineers should check
Campus placements sometimes require Class 10 and 12 marks, a minimum CGPA, a specific graduation year or no active backlogs. Follow the job or placement notice even when those details would not normally belong on a mid-career resume. Use your college’s official CGPA conversion, if required; do not invent a percentage conversion.
For most private-sector software roles, a headshot, family information, PAN, Aadhaar and marital status are unnecessary on the resume. Do not add your current CTC or notice period unless the job process asks or that information materially helps the reader. Enter administrative details in the appropriate application fields.
If you have a career gap, list employment dates accurately and explain the gap briefly when relevant. Don’t stretch contract dates or call a personal project full-time employment. A recruiter can ask about a gap, but they can also ask about a fabricated role.
Review your resume before submitting
- 1The job title and your strongest evidence are at the top.
- 2Contact details are in the body of the document, not just in a header or image.
- 3Dates agree with the application form and your professional profiles.
- 4Each technical skill is one you can explain with an example.
- 5Projects identify your contribution rather than claiming group work as individual work.
- 6Any numbers have a defensible baseline, period or measurement method.
- 7Repositories work and reveal no secrets or customer data.
- 8The exported document contains selectable text in a sensible order.
- 9The file type and size follow the employer’s instructions.
- 10Any autofilled application fields have been checked and corrected.

Frequently asked questions
Is one page enough for a fresher software engineer?
Usually it is a good starting point. Use the page for one or two substantial projects, relevant skills and education. Don’t shrink the font to squeeze in unrelated certificates. Follow any specific page limit in the application.
Is a two-page resume acceptable with two or more years of experience?
Yes, when the second page contains relevant work that adds value. Two pages are not automatically better. A concise single page may work for a focused engineer; broader responsibilities can justify more space.
Should I list DSA, OOP, DBMS and operating systems as skills?
List subjects you can discuss confidently, particularly when the role asks for them. For a fresher, a technical-skills section can include them. For an experienced candidate, recent engineering responsibilities should usually carry more weight than a long coursework list.
Can I use an AI tool to write software engineering bullets?
Use it to edit wording, but supply the facts yourself. Check every tool, metric and result it suggests. A fluent bullet is not useful if you cannot explain it in a technical interview.
Does an ATS-friendly resume guarantee an interview?
No. Readable formatting helps the application, but eligibility, technical evidence and the employer’s hiring decisions still matter. An ATS score is not a hiring prediction.
